"This lampshade was created using the Japanese art of suminagashi, a technique that dates back to the Heian period (794- 1185) and was the precursor for all other marbling.

The patterning involves floating ink on still water, forming concentric rings by lightly touching an ink laden brush to the surface, followed by a spreading agent. Gently fanning or stirring the water encourages the lines to swirl, creating an abstract pattern that reflects the materials and conditions of the day. Carefully lowering washi paper to the surface captures the lines; an impression of a moment in time, never to be repeated. Each shade is completely unique, and is numbered according to size and sequence.

This lampshade was made using Japanese Tosa washi, a traditional paper that is made with kozo fibres from the mulberry bush. It is very strong and absorbent, perfect for suminagashi, but also translucent enough to give a soft, clear light when used as a shade. " Sarah Amatt, maker.
